Merry Christmas Wall Art

Merry Christmas Wall Art

My Merry Christmas Wall Art is such a great addition to your holiday decor. Quick strip piecing quickly assembles the pieced border. Great appliqué shapes with full scale templates are included in the pattern. Thanks to great products on the market such as fusible fleece and Steam-A-Seam2, this appliqué project comes together so much easier than you would expect! Printer required for template. Happy sewing!

The Merry Christmas Wall Art is available in a traditional or a modern cover to accommodate different shop/customer styles.

Robert Kaufman fabric kits are available in Brrr! by Laurie Wisbrun.

Tips and FAQ

1. What do I do if I pre-wash my fabric, don’t want to use the selvedge, and/or use fabric smaller than the 44/45” width of fabric (WOF) the pattern requires?

Here are some pattern adjustments you can make. No additional fabric required.  Substitute these statements in place of the original pattern instructions.

Cutting

B.e.  Also, unfold remaining fabric for each of the five border fabrics and cut two (instead of one) 2.5" x 4.5" rectangle for each color.

Sewing

C.b.  Subdivide this WOF strip set into nine (instead of 10) sets of 10.5" x 4.5" pieces. To get the 10th set, stitch one of each of the 2.5” x 4.5” border fabrics in the same color order to match 10.5” x 4.5” strip sets. Press seams to the right.

2. What do I do if I want to use directional fabrics for the border pieces?

Instead of cutting 2.5” WOF strips, you will need to individually cut 2.5” x 4.5” pieces and sew together as shown in the Sewing diagram C.c. on page 2. Keep in mind that a few pieces will be oriented horizontal and most will be vertical.

3. What if I don’t want to mount my Merry Christmas Wall Art on plywood?

You have a couple of options

  • Mount it on two pieces of foam board cut down to 40” x 14” x ½” for a lighter weight option.
  • Quilt it as a regular wall hanging/table runner. Get a 1/2 yard of backing fabric, 1/2 yard fusible fleece (cut to 40" x 14"), and 1/3 yard binding fabric (cut three 2.5" strips). Fuse the fleece to the wrong side of the backing fabric. You will need to trim the top of the Merry Christmas Wall Art down to 40” x 14” since you are no longer upholstering it around to the back side of the board. Layer, pin, quilt, and bind it.
